Computing Curriculum

Intent

In this technological age, where computers are a vital part of our modern lives, our main aim is to ensure that children are safe users of technology. At Redwell Primary School, we want to raise safe and healthy children who are mindful, active producers of technology. Children need to know how to navigate the online world safely, maturely and sensitively; ensuring they use their critical, ‘computational thinking’ skills when presented with a range of views and information that will enable them to participate effectively and safely in a digital world.

Implementation

To achieve this, we use the Teach Computing scheme which prepares our children for their future in an ever changing technological world and gives them skills that can be transferred across a wide range of subjects including coding, spreadsheets and typing, using the same programmes used in Secondary school and in adult life. These skills start in our Early Years department with the use of various forms of technology such as iPads and BeeBots and others within the provision to give the children a strong foundation ready for ‘formal’ computing lessons which start in Year 1 and go all the way through to Year 6. Each year, the children build on the skills they have learnt in the previous year which builds their confidence and skills, making them competent computational thinkers.

Impact

The impact of our broad Computing curriculum is that all children leave Redwell with the skills they need to  be  apt in using technology and prepares them for the curriculum delivered in secondary schools, so that they have the best chance of success as they progress into Key Stage 3. We believe our Computing curriculum sparks interest and produces children who are prepared for our ever-changing technological world.

How are the British Values developed in Computing at Redwell?

Rule of Law

  • The Computing Curriculum emphasises the importance of responsible use of technology, including respect for intellectual property, privacy, and security. We also understand the use of rules on computers and the internet such as when we are allowed to use social media and what we are allowed to post and share. We understand that rules are to keep others and ourselves safe and to help the internet be an enjoyable and engaging place.

Democracy

  • The Computing Curriculum provides opportunities for children to learn about the importance of democratic processes in the use and development of technology. Teachers can encourage children to discuss and reflect on these processes, and to participate in decision-making and problem-solving activities that involve the use of technology.

Individual Liberty

  • The Computing Curriculum provides opportunities for children to express their creativity and explore their own interests and passions through the use of technology. For example, they can learn to code, design and create digital content, or use digital tools for personal expression and communication. Teachers can promote this value by encouraging children to take ownership of their learning and to develop their own digital identities

Mutual Respect and tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

  • The Computing Curriculum emphasizes the importance of respectful behaviour and positive online interactions. Children can learn about the impact of their online behaviour on others, and how to communicate and collaborate effectively in digital environments. Teachers can encourage this value by promoting positive online behaviour, providing opportunities for collaborative activities, and emphasizing the importance of respectful and responsible use of technology. The Computing Curriculum provides opportunities for children to learn about and appreciate the diversity of cultures and beliefs through the use of technology. Teachers can promote this value by incorporating activities and resources that highlight cultural diversity, and by encouraging children to engage with and learn from others with different backgrounds and perspectives.
